Canterbury Donations Function - May 2010

The Chairperson of The Canterbury Community Trust, Mr Barry Dent, talks at our bi-annual donation function on the 10th May 2010.

"Good evening and welcome to you all.  Firstly I introduce our Christchurch Trustees.  In September last year the Minister of Finance appointed Dorothy Oakley, Alec Neill and Joseph Thomas to replace Richard Tankersley, Bob Todd and Fran Jessep.  Welcome to our new Trustees and thank you to Richard, Bob and Fran for your efforts.  More will be said about those efforts at our Public Meeting on 2nd August.

Welcome today to Edie Moke - our newly appointed Deputy Chair who cant be with us, and Rob Dally, March Richardson and Linda Rutland.

I am Barry Dent and I have been the Chair of the Trust since 2008.

I also wish to welcome our staff who are with us today.  Welcome to Catherine, Louise and Wendy, and to our new staff Eamonn, our Donations Manager and Diana - our first impressions person who will be your first contact with the Trust when you contact us.  Also with us today is our Trust Manager Wayne Ward.  This is our team.

We are here today to thank you for all the effort you put infor your organisations and to the community of Canterbury day after day.

It is your community spirit and effort that helps keep many voluntary organisations going.

Today we have groups representing the Education, Community Services, Economic and Employment, Environmental, Hospital and Medical, Heritage, Infants and Children, Recreation and Leisure, and Sport sectors with us.

You also represent a large number of the successful Canterbury applicants for donations totalling $14.75 million for the year ended 31 March 2010.

I would like to confirm that donations for the present year to 31 March 2011 will continue at 4% of the Trust's capital value.  This represents an increase of $0.5 Million over last years $19.5 Million and is as a result of good investment performance over the last 12 months.

This signals the Trust's commitment of continuing support to our communities and community groups at a time when there may have been some uncertainty over donation amounts going forward.

From January 2010 businesses and employees were able to sign up to payroll giving and get a tax deduction at source.  Individuals can claim one-third of every dollar they donate up to the value of their total annual income as disinct from the previous situation whereby tax refunds were limited to $630.00.

In addition businesses can now claim a tax refund of up to 100% of their charitable donation up to the maximum value of their annual income.

This is an opportunity, in my opinion, for your organisation to be pro-active and have a look at the possibility of seeking out some new and different sources of funding where the end result is a "win-win" for everyone involved.

I wish to take this opportunity to remind you we have moved our offices from Oxford Terrace, above Tiffanys, to Level 1, 12 Hazeldean Road, Hazeldean Business Park just along Lincoln Road here in Addington.

There is plenty of free parking if you wish to call in as well as an elevator and stairs to access our offices.

In conclusion I wish to take this opportunity to thank you for all you do for the Christchurch and surrounding communities.  Keep up your good work.  Your community is dependent on you.

Thank you for taking time out of your busy lives to be with us today.  Please enjoy your evening as our guests and have a safe journey home"
