Tax Exempt Status
Many organisations obtained from the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) an IRD charitable status/exemption letter certifying that. as they were an organisation established for non-taxable purposes, they were exempt from paying income tax.
This includes organisations carrying out charitable activities, as well as those organisations established as amateur sports promoters and district improvement associations.
Making donations to such organisations is important to The Canterbury Community Trust as it means that the income we use in making that donation is not taxable for us. The less income tax we have to pay, then obviously the greater the amount of money we have to make donations.
Conversely, any donation made to organisations which do not hold an IRD charitable status/exemption letter means that The Canterbury Community Trust must pay more tax on the income that is used to pay that donation.
While obtaining one of these letters is not a complex or extensive task, there will be organisations, which, while being eligible to qualify for an exemption, for whatever reason have not obtained these letters.
You are asked to certify that you are either :
- Tax exempt or charitable (copy of letter attached).
Note: a certificate of exemption from Interest and Dividend PAYE or RWT certificate does not fulfill this requirement
- Not currently tax exempt or charitable,
but will apply to the IRD to obtain a tax exempt or charitable letter
- Not tax exempt
Please ensure that you tick the appropriate box, which outlines your tax position.

The purpose of the Trust, which was established in 1988, is to distribute funds for charitable, cultural, philanthropic and recreational benefits in our four regions (Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough and the Chatham Islands) - all of which benefit our quality of life. Our donations in turn, assist thousands of people working in numerous voluntary organisations, to create their own social and cultural dividends thereby rewarding their communities.
